Welcome to the seventeenth and final chapter of Backdrop Generator - The Far Away Reality. This serialised concept album was completed in 2005, but was never officially released. Set in the future, the year is 2020…….

All over the real world, screens displaying the Far Away Reality start to brake up - pixel by pixel. The picture steadily turns to a distorted mess before disappearing altogether in a flash of white light. Then…… nothing….

The next day, sun shine on green hills that stretch beneath a clear blue sky. In the distance, there’s a train. On the train, there’s the Hacker. He reaches forward and flips the lid of his laptop. A tear falls from his cheek as he gently touches the display. There, on the screen, is Little Quantum.

He saved her. He loves her and that’s the most real thing she’s ever known. She blows him a kiss and laughs. He smiles and blows one back.

In the corner of the screen his laptop displays a news flash. Under the title ‘GHOST IN THE MACHINE’. the news reader talks of Gordax denial after apparently pleading vast sums of money to various charities. Further stories of dept being cancelled start to appear. Credit cards not working, computer systems going crazy and not shutting down. Then all T.V. transmission stops.

And that’s how the revolution started. Within months the corporate age was over and so was the Government who commissioned our creation….. President Black and the Trinity - your fore fathers - helped us to shape the world as you know it. This, is your history…..

Backdrop Generator - Chapter 16 - The Big Crash

Welcome to the sixteenth chapter of Backdrop Generator - The Far Away Reality. This serialised concept album was completed in 2005, but was never officially released. Set in the future, the year is 2020…….

The Hacker works all night to intercept the portal. They don’t have long to wait before Apoline sits at her pool and spreads her palms on the water’s surface. They are in direct communication. The three introduce themselves and start to explain the nature of her telepathy. They watch her reactions and encourage her to talk freely. She starts to ask questions and the Three end up telling her everything: that her world is a computer program, that millions of people are watching them, and why. Worst of all they explain that she is being used by Gordax to undermine the whole project. Apoline withdraws her hands, gets to her feet and runs out of the house, across the plains to find Ray.

“You were right Ray, we are being watched, all of us!”

“I knew it! Merde! Who is doing this?”

“I thought I was channeling light, but I’m spreading darkness and corruption. We don’t have free will; we’ve been made by them. We’re borrowing consciousness, it’s all an illusion!’

‘Borrowing!! Ha!! No one can control me…. Take my hand Apoline… let’s blow this whole fucking world apart!! We’ll show them free will!!’

Backdrop Generator - Chapter 15 - From Across The Never

Welcome to the fifteenth chapter of Backdrop Generator - The Far Away Reality. This serialised concept album was completed in 2005, but was never officially released. Set in the future, the year is 2020…….

The other abnormality that T.S.inc. found, they kept to themselves. It seems there is a glitch in the program, a tiny puncture in the fabric of the software environment. This minute hole provides access to a constant flow of data - a digitised stream of human consciousness. Through her pool, Apoline has been tapping into this data, interpreting it as telepathy. This is unknown to any of the Backdrop team, so Gordax use it to their advantage….

With the Hacker gone, The Far Away Reality seems to be running as normal again. One day, quite by accident HeadSpin catches a snipet of the program. The project has grown into something quite amazing and he feels proud of his involvement. It does seem to be slowly making a difference. But within an instant, his feelings of satisfaction turn to alarm. He can’t believe it. There’s an underlying negativity about Apoline. It’s very subtle. Occasionally she intimates that her friends should all behave in a certain way or look similar to one another. She even seems to find reasons not to do things, HeadSpin contacts Borg and Galore. Together, they decide to go and see Marcus Black at Backdrop HQ.

Black goes on to explain that if they had hard evidence to show the Government, they might listen. He could arrange for his ex-employee to have access to whatever equipment he needs to find that evidence, “but YOU have to take responsibility for him!! It’s up to you….”
The Hacker emerges from his hovel of chardonnay drenched self-pity. He is a broken man. He views The Three with contempt, but hears them out. At the mention of supplying him with access to the Far Away Reality, he becomes agitated, desperate even. HeadSpin informs Black that the Hacker’s on board and the desired provisions are soon delivered.

The Hacker starts work. As soon as he can, he tries to get to Little Quantum. Fully expecting his portal to have been blocked, he tries to reconnect anyway. To his surprise, he finds that someone else is using it! He discovers more… The portal has been relocated to penetrate Apoline’s pool of crystal water and is pumping information into it. This stream of information leads back to Gordax.

He explains to the three that Gordax is piping messages into Apoline’s pool and they start to form a plan. However, the Three are still unaware of the Hacker’s desire for Little Quantum, so he encourages them to communicate directly with Apoline via the pool. This might distract them long enough to allow him to get to Little Quantum….

Backdrop Generator - Chapter 14 - Access All Areas

Welcome to the fourteenth chapter of Backdrop Generator - The Far Away Reality. This serialised concept album was completed in 2005, but was never officially released. Set in the future, the year is 2020…….

In the real world, speculation builds concerning this latest turn of events. Marcus Black and his staff at the Backdrop nerve centre have been working overtime to discover what happened to Apoline. Sensing progress is being blocked, Black suspects a problem within the team. As soon as he sees Little Quantum’s predicament, Black decides to consult an outside agency. Trouble Shoot Incorporated is the industry leader in diagnostics and solutions, but unknown to Black, T.S.inc. was recently taken over - by GORDAX.

The Gordax executives can’t believe their luck. Their latest research indicates the Government funded T.V. show as the reason for their recent dip in market penetration. What a chance to remove this fly from their ointment! The Gordax executives slaver their chops as T.S. inc. is given full access the the Far Away Reality.

They discover two anomalies. The first is a trial that leads to a Backdrop employee. This employee has been tampering with the program’s code and has even created a portal (although no-one’s really sure why). The Hacker is labelled a harmless devient and kicked off the project, with great satisfaction. To him, the public humiliation is irrelevant, but having his link with Little Quantum severed leaves him absolutely devastated. He sits at home and drowns his sorrow, yearning for her……

Backdrop Generator - Chapter 12 - Seraph Solitaire

Welcome to the twelfth chapter of Backdrop Generator - The Far Away Reality. This serialised concept album was completed in 2005, but was never officially released. Set in the future, the year is 2020…….

Apoline is alone…..

Only The Hacker know where she is. In desert Breach, she’s sentenced to infinite deaths by mindless guards.

Stuck in purgatory. Every time she is killed, she awakes at the start of the game. Her feelings of horror and dread fade into hopelessness and apathy…….

Ray follows his hunch. The Neon wake leads him to the edge of a sheer rock face. Floating in front of him is a large round emblem with the words ‘Record Scalp’ circling it. In its middle, is the number 73. Ray picks up a small rock from the ground and hurls it at the object. On impact, the rock vanishes. He does it again, just to make sure. Ray is intrigued…. This gives him an idea…. he mounts his chopper and takes an almighty run up. With careless abandon, he plunges off the cliff, through the portal, and is dumped in Desert Breach. The guards respond immediately with a hail of bullets. Ray doesn’t stand a chance. His limp body falls from the bike and hits the ground. Then darkness….

From this void, comes the sound of crying. The crying becomes steadily louder. Reality sucks at him and he awakes. Directly opposite him is Apoline. She looks haunted and broken but a smile forces its way through the tears and she wraps her arms around him. As she does her best to explain what has happened to her, Ray plans their escape. He shrouds himself in a cloak of invisibility and fights their way back to the portal.As he harvests the game’s sentinels, Apoline follows safely behind his Ginger Lashes….

The Hacker plays it cool…..

For now, at least, he’s covered his tracks. Throughout the day, media speculation over Apoline’s disappearance reaches fever pitch. Within the Far Away Reality, the finger points at Ray - the prankster. He is accused, but of course, he knows otherwise. Ray thinks hard about last night. He remembers seeing something strange on the horizon as Apoline was leaving - a brightly coloured ‘rip’ in the sky. He jump on his chopper and races off to investigate.

Backdrop Generator - Chapter 10 - Singing In The Sleeper's Eyes

Welcome to the tenth chapter of Backdrop Generator - The Far Away Reality. This serialised concept album was completed in 2005, but was never officially released. Set in the future, the year is 2020…….

Apoline sits with her hands touching the surface of the pool. She is weaving the minds of four companions when she detects an uninvited presence through the crystal water. This makes her feel very uncomfortable and reminds her of conversations that she’s had with Ray. He has often expressed feelings of being watched, so she decides to go and talk to him.

In the real world, it’s 3am. The Hacker installs his kidnapping devices as he monitors all corners of the Far Away Reality. He is intrigued by Apoline’s sudden departure and tracks her journey to Ray’s cathedral cave. The ensuing conversation sends The Hacker into a frenzied panic. Apoline tells Ray of her feelings of intrusion. “I am sensing a presence. It’s like someone looking down my back” she exclaims. The Hacker freezes. Maybe he’s been nicked?! He must shut Apoline up before it’s too late. He scrambles to divert the portal that he made for Little Quantum to an old computer game: a military style shoot’em up called Desert Breach. Then he sends his Birds With Blades to snatch Apoline on her way home. They take her through the portal and into the game.

In the morning; she is gone……

As the days pass, he becomes increasingly unhinged, his obsession rocking an already fragile hold on reality. Knowing that everybody desires Little Quantum, the Hacker starts to believe that he is not alone in trying to get to her. Determined to protect her, he decides to hack a portal into the Far Away Reality. He will then fashion Birds With Blades to pick her up and fly her through the portal, into his laptop.

Ever since the Backdrop project started, he has become even more obsessive and introverted. The object of his infatuation is Little Quantum. Everybody’s infatuated with her. Little Quantum is beautiful, fresh and innocent, full of wonder and enthusiasm, Idolised by millions, she is a comic, a mimic, and totally unaware of her allure. He made her. He wants her. He watches her all the time. She is his antidote to a life of despair and loneliness. He has to be close to her and imagines infiltrating the Far Away Reality. He begins to wonder about stealing her data…….

Backdrop Generator - Chapter 7 - The Far Away Reality

Welcome to the seventh chapter of Backdrop Generator - The Far Away Reality. This serialised concept album was completed in 2005, but was never officially released. Set in the future, the year is 2020…….

A vibration disturbs Blister. She looks down to see Siad The Strong. He’s meditating in front of the mountain, intent on moving it with the power of his mind. Elsewhere Ballistic Bornhill launches an array of spectacular projectiles that the Intrepid Tordrill gracefully tries to avoid as he cloud-surfs across the sky….

Omega One builds another holographic molecular puzzle as Truth-less Tremble ties her in knots with poetic banter of insight and truth….

Out in the desert. Ray’s built a fifty-foot sound sculpture from glass. Its dazzlingly intricate structure produces an unending sequence of notes. Those who have watched Ray build it are overwhelmed by stillness and peace, almost hypnotised by its serenity. That serenity is shattered with an almighty explosion as Ray comes crashing through the sculpture on his chopper. His howls of excitement are all that remain as he speeds into the distance…. And so life continues in the Far Away Reality.

The program is self-perpetuating. Its inhabitants are real. Like living Superheroes, they know neither fear nor doubt. The fusion of the Three has exceeded all expectations. With their work complete, Head Spin, Borg and Galore return home, to a world a-buzz with the talk of the Far Away Reality. As time goes by, Gordax executives become increasingly agitated. Last month’s sales figures show a continued downturn in profit. What is going on?

Backdrop Generator - Chapter 6 - 'Wong' Ray Wounds

Welcome to the sixth chapter of Backdrop Generator - The Far Away Reality. This serialised concept album was completed in 2005, but was never officially released. Set in the future, the year is 2020…….

There is one who never comes to Apoline’s House. He is “Wong” Ray Wounds a childlike, sensitive, hermit, who inhabits a Gothic Cathedral–like cave. He is wildly inventive: sculptor, alchemist, physicist; a stiletto wearing, cross dressing renaissance man with a six pack and a choir boy’s ruff! The climax if his art is the destruction, in an ecstatic frenzy, of what ever beautiful thing he has just created. The others respect Ray but are wary of his practical jokes and only Apoline is permitted to visit him. He is often heard thundering around the plains on his chopper, his abundant ginger hair streaming behind him. He has a deep, unrelenting feeling that something is wrong but he just cant put his finger on it. He feels he is being watched. So intense is his paranoia, that he has developed the ability to become invisible. But to his extreme frustration, his ginger lashes remain.

The Far Away Reality runs 24/7. The main focus of the broadcast is the enormous tree house inhabited by Apoline and Little Quantum. Apoline has an entourage of butterflies, which constantly surround her voluminous auburn hair. She is the Far Away Reality’s spiritual guide and her strange telepathy attracts many other characters to the cross-shaped tree house. They sit in its centre, around her pool of crystal water. From the pool she draws their thoughts, combining them to create incredible tapestries of understanding. Unceasingly hospitable, Apoline is loved. She is the linchpin.

The government announces the launch of their new reality TV show. The hype is enormous. ‘The Far Away Reality’ bursts onto the public’s screens and they are mesmerised. There are giant plasmas on skyscrapers and tiny tellies on earrings. Holographic TV is projected into the sky and people still rush home to watch. The public are enthralled by the weird characters. Slack jawed; they drink in the wonder.

Welcome to the third chapter of Backdrop Generator - The Far Away Reality. This serialised concept album was completed in 2005, but was never officially released. Set in the future, the year is 2020…….

The project commences, but it seems the governments brief is out of reach. The development team can only generate highly polished, but formulaic, two dimensional characters to inhabit the programme. There is no spark, no originality, no inspiration or zest. The Far Away Reality looks just like any other hi-tech product that could have been produced by Gordax itself. The public maybe entertained, but not moved. Nothing will change….

Marcus Black, the project leader, leaves Backdrop operations late in the evening. He walks along the dark allies which route beneath the city scape, to his apartment. Hunched against the wind, his mind is over run with the job in hand. He just can’t see a way of developing the programme beyond the mundane tricks of computer generation. How can they inspire consumers whose minds are already saturated by such images?

Turning the corner past an out-of-the-way bar, he laughs to himself. This is a weird part of town and he’s not quite sure how he’s ended up here. He could have taken a cab, but he needed to walk to help clear his mind. This is the biggest challenge so far. Maybe it is beyond him. The rain starts and he takes refuge in a café.

What a dive. He would never normally frequent a place like this, and let’s face it, there are scarcely any of them left. It certainly isn’t a Gordax franchise. The people here seem to him to be un-stylish, ugly even. He orders a beverage that he doesn’t drink and waits for the rain to stop. “Stupid ugly people“ he thinks. Laughter erupts from the next booth and he tunes into their conversation.

There are two women and a man who are just leaving. They gather together the various papers they have obviously been discussing. “Yes but do you think anyone gives a shit about this publication Head Spin?”
“No Borg, and that’s the whole point, we do it because we do it, it’s our thing. I ache, and I just do it. You’re the same!”
”So what are you writing about this week Galore?” The conversation fades as they exit the café.

“Weird” thinks Black, he moves over to their booth and picks up a forgotten sheet. It’s a news letter, with the words Silver Cults written at the top. It’s filled with articles, ideas, opinions, anti-corporate rantings and above all a sense of individuality.

“And people still do this stuff?”

Noticing the rain has stopped, Black decides to leave. He is feeling tired and makes his way towards the main road to get a cab the rest of the way home. As his cab approaches the huge neon lights of the city square and the relentless swagger of the sour-faced shoppers, Marcus Black is struck by the contrast between the two worlds. What makes those three in the café so different and unusual? Society ridicules people like them, but they don’t care. They seen more real somehow. If only he could capture that spirit within the Far Away Reality….
“That’s it!” he shouts in a moment of clarity, “Driver, turn round. Take me back!”

Chaos attractions, attracted us

Weird out fashions, appealed to us
Selling miracles in the street

Crystalline omens, ignored by us
Narrative accounts, lay unknown to us
Materialism, engulfing us
Doing business with the sheep

The politicians sit in their government buildings, with their heads in their hands. They are worried. They see on the horizon, the take over; the total Gordax monopoly. The electorate are no use. Gorged on gadgets their minds are too fat to think. They are pathological consumers, whose thoughts are manipulated and dictated by the mass media - a subsidiary of Gordax. In desperation, a crazy idea is hatched. The government will beat the corporation at their own game. It will commission a reality TV show, with a difference. This will be a computer generated, ‘Far-Away-Reality’ populated by magnificent, creative beings. Theses cyber icons will inspire an apathetic public and wean them from the Gordax addiction. Under a top secret directive, a crack develop team is assembled, code name: Backdrop Generator.

This is the real world: a place where people are willing subordinates of mass marketing. A monoculture; tube fed by titanic multinationals. One such corporation is Gordax. Today, Godax was reported as being a fraction ahead in the race of the greedy. Gordax influences all aspects of society. The Gordax endorsement, design profile and logo mean everything. From the trainers you wear to the machine you use to cast your vote. The people follow the Gordax convention and lead an ape-like life of imitation. There’s an illusion of choice, quality and value for money. People have faith in Gordax. They’re happy. They must be - they’re surrounded by every product that they could ever want. And THIS, is the REAL world……
